1. Every Holiday Ended the Same Way
People often say that family is everything. I used to believe that too.
My name is Emily, and for twelve years I tried harder than anyone to keep peace in my husband’s family. Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and especially the Fourth of July—if there was a reason to gather, our house became the unofficial family headquarters.
At first, I didn’t mind.
I genuinely enjoyed hosting. I loved decorating the backyard with string lights, preparing homemade side dishes, marinating ribs overnight, and watching everyone laugh around the fire pit.
But over the years, one uncomfortable pattern became impossible to ignore.
My mother-in-law, Linda, never came alone.
She arrived with her husband, three adult children, their spouses, seven grandchildren, and sometimes neighbors or distant cousins who had apparently been invited without asking us.
