Eight Years After I Was Told One of My Twin Sons Had Died, His School Called Me About a Boy Who Looked Exactly Like My Son
The call from Cedarbrook Elementary came at 10:17 on a Tuesday morning.
“Mrs. Bennett?”
“This is Claire Bennett.”
“This is Principal Warren. I’m calling about Noah.”
My stomach tightened automatically.
My eight-year-old son, Noah Cole, was not a troublemaker. He talked too much in class, occasionally forgot that indoor voices existed, and once organized an unauthorized paper-airplane contest during math, but serious calls from the principal were rare.
“Is he hurt?”
“No. He’s fine.”
I exhaled.
“Then what happened?”
There was a pause.
“He was involved in an altercation with another student.”
I closed my eyes.
“What kind of altercation?”
“Mostly pushing. No one was injured.”
“Mostly?”
“I think it would be better if you came in.”
That sentence irritated me.
If my son had pushed someone, tell me.
