“Sutton, I never stopped loving you.”
I pointed to the divorce papers.
“So what is it?”
Ashton took a deep breath.
“Rebecca encouraged me to honestly consider my needs and understand my options. That’s why I met with a lawyer.”
I felt a tightness in my chest.
“Did you really go to a divorce lawyer?”
“Once. He prepared these documents, but I never signed them or submitted them.”
“Why not?”
“Because when I seriously thought about ending our marriage, I realized it wasn’t what I wanted.”
I looked at him.
“Then why keep the documents?”
“I didn’t know what to do with them. I was ashamed that I had even considered leaving.”
“And the suitcase?”
He lowered his gaze.
“I packed this up after our fight yesterday. I was thinking of staying with my brother for a few days so we could both have some space.”
“Were you supposed to leave without talking to me?”
