“Will you tell her what you told me? That you expected me to get used to it before you asked?”
He looked towards the corridor.
“I’ll talk to her.”
On Saturday, my sister took Noah to the park and Mark invited Diane into the kitchen.
She barely looked at the apartment ad.
“I don’t need this. I have a home here.”
“We agreed on six weeks,” I said. “It will be available after those six weeks.”
She turned towards Mark.
“Are you really telling me to leave?”
He took a deep breath.
I braced myself for another request to tolerate her a little longer.
“Mom, I told you you could stay,” he said.Diane nodded. “Exactly.”
“I shouldn’t have done that without asking Claire.”
“So now I have to pay for your mistake?”
She looked at him.
“I’ll cover the deposit and the first month. I’ll help you move in. But I can’t keep my promise that we’ll all live here.”
