“What if I still don’t want to live together?”
“We haven’t gotten that far.”
“You already told her to rent the house! This can’t be reversed that quickly.”
Mark pulled out a chair.
“Can’t we try to establish some decent rules?”
I remained standing. If I had sat down, it would have been like accepting a conversation he had arranged only after he had made his decision.
“I agreed to six weeks.”
“Her apartment now has a tenant.”
“Then why didn’t you ask me before it happened?”
Diane got up
“Don’t talk like I forced my way in. He asked me to stay.”
“I believe you,” I said. “But he couldn’t agree for both of us.”
She looked at Mark, expecting him to defend her.
Instead he rubbed his forehead.
“Could you give us more time?”
“Until when?”
He was silent.
That six-week deadline was the only reason I tolerated so much.
