At the age of 13, she gave birth to a child, and 18 years later, on her daughter’s birthday, she received a letter from the hospital after which the girl’s father admitted for the first time that he had been hiding the truth.

In the center stood a cherry cake with eighteen candles.

For Emma, the sight brought back memories of another birthday, years ago, when Sophie was too young to understand why her mother cried as she held her in her arms.

So much has changed since then.

When everyone finished singing, Sophie surprised them by raising her hand.

“Can I say something?”

There was silence in the room.

She turned to Emma.

“When I was younger, people sometimes thought you were my older sister. I laughed about it, but I was always proud to tell them you were my mom.”

Emma smiled through her tears.

“And I know you were just a baby when I was born,” Sophie continued. “I know you had to grow up before you were ready. But you never made me feel like I was a burden.”

She took her mother’s hand.

“You gave me a home. You listened to me. You let me ask questions, even when the answers were difficult. And now that I’m eighteen, I want you to remember something.”
