At the age of 13, she gave birth to a child, and 18 years later, on her daughter’s birthday, she received a letter from the hospital after which the girl’s father admitted for the first time that he had been hiding the truth.

But that’s not the secret that was hardest for me to tell you.

Emma’s hands started shaking.

A few months after Sophie was born, Lucas’s mother returned to our home. She came alone.

She cried. She said she disagreed with her husband’s decisions but was afraid to challenge him. She begged me to let her see her granddaughter.

I told her that Sophie was your daughter and that no decision about her future could be made without your knowledge.

She left a photo, her address, and a message asking me to contact her when you’re ready.

I kept these things.

At first, I wanted to protect you until you were healed. Later, I was afraid that telling you would bring back the pain you had worked so hard to overcome.

I told myself I was protecting you. Perhaps, in a way, I was also protecting myself from having to witness your suffering again.I should have trusted you and told you the truth.
