Have you ever woken up and noticed a wet spot on your pillow?
If so, you’re definitely not alone.
Drooling during sleep is more common than many people realize. While it can sometimes be embarrassing—especially if you wake up next to someone else—it is usually nothing to worry about. In many cases, nighttime drooling simply happens because your body relaxes during sleep and saliva escapes from your mouth.
However, frequent or excessive drooling can sometimes offer clues about your sleeping position, breathing habits, nasal congestion, medications, or even certain health conditions.
So, why does it happen?
Here are six possible reasons you may be drooling while you sleep—and what you can do about it.
- You’re Sleeping With Your Mouth Open
One of the simplest explanations for nighttime drooling is sleeping with your mouth open.
When you’re awake, swallowing happens frequently and automatically. During sleep, however, your swallowing rate decreases. If your mouth remains open, saliva can collect and eventually escape onto your pillow.
