Flight of Truth: Chiara’s Discoveries in Flight and a New Life

Flight of Truth: A Flying Discovery and Chiara’s New Life.

Soft dawn light filtered through the windows of Milan’s Malpensa Airport, reflecting off the polished terminal floor. Beside me, my seven-year-old Leonardo walked briskly, his airplane-shaped backpack slung over his shoulders. My husband, Roberto, had been an airline pilot for almost a decade, but our son had never had the opportunity to fly with his father.

Every time Roberto packed his travel bag and put on his pressed uniform, Leonardo followed him around the house, peppering him with admiring questions. “Are you flying one of those giant planes today?” “Do the passengers know you’re my dad?” “Are children even allowed in the cockpit?” Roberto always limited himself to perfunctory smiles, citing strict safety regulations and a lack of time.

A few weeks earlier, my husband had remarked with remarkable nonchalance about a short Saturday flight to Rome Fiumicino. He was supposed to fly into the capital, take a few hours off between shifts, and be home for dinner. It was at that moment that an idea popped into my head: organize an unforgettable surprise for our child.

I’m usually the kind of person who doesn’t hide anything from my husband, but this time I wanted to splurge. I secretly bought two back-row tickets for Leonardo and myself. I planned to remain completely invisible during boarding, sit at the back of the plane, and only become noticeable once we landed in Rome. When I revealed the plan to Leonardo, his enthusiasm was unstoppable.

“Are we really going to fly on Daddy’s plane?” he asked, his eyes wide. “Yes, honey, but it has to be a secret,” I replied with a wink. The boy took the mission with almost solemnity. He stuffed his headphones, a pack of jelly beans, and his favorite plastic airplane into his suitcase.

Before closing his backpack, he added a carefully folded piece of paper. It was a drawing he’d made with markers: it depicted Robert standing next to a huge, blue passenger plane. At the top of the paper, in large letters, with a few slightly crooked lines, Leonardo proudly wrote: BEST PILOT IN THE WORLD.

Navigating Malpensa Airport without Roberto to meet us proved much more difficult than we expected. As we walked toward the security checkpoint, Leonardo suddenly grabbed my coat sleeve. “Mom! Look over there!” he whispered, pointing to a specific spot in the terminal.
