For 3 Years, My Mother Screamed During Every Bath. My Brother Called It Attention-Seeking. Then One Caregiver Touched Her Back — and Everything Changed

Sophie looked up.

“Who sent this?”

“I never knew.”

“There was no return address.”

“Did you show police?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“Thomas said it was a cruel prank.”

Margaret laughed softly.

“A prank.”

She reached deeper into the box.

Then she removed a photograph.

It was newer than the others.

Maybe ten years old.

A woman stood outside a restaurant.

She appeared to be in her forties.

Dark curly hair.

Margaret’s eyes.

Sophie stared.

“Is that Emily?”

“I don’t know.”

Margaret whispered.

“But I think it is.”

“Where did you get this?”

“A private investigator.”

Sophie looked shocked.

“You hired someone?”

“Twice.”

“The first man disappeared after three weeks.”

“The second quit.”

“Why?”

“They were threatened.”

Sophie leaned back.

“By whom?”

Margaret looked at her.

“By Nathan.”

PART 3

Sophie stared at Margaret.

“Nathan?”

Margaret nodded slowly.

“He was thirty-two when I hired the second investigator.”

“He found out.”

“He came to my house furious.”
