For 3 Years, My Mother Screamed During Every Bath. My Brother Called It Attention-Seeking. Then One Caregiver Touched Her Back — and Everything Changed

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you ask Nathan?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He called me delusional.”

“Then he took Richard’s papers from the house.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Three boxes.”

“He said they were business records.”

“I never saw them again.”

Sophie felt an uncomfortable chill.

“Margaret, why are you telling me this now?”

Margaret looked toward the mirror.

“Because someone went through my room last week.”

Sophie froze.

“What?”

“My cedar box had been moved.”

“The lock was scratched.”

Sophie’s eyes went to the door.

“Did you report it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because the only person who visited me that day was Nathan.”

The room fell silent.

Sophie stood.

“We need to tell the administrator.”

“No.”

“We need police.”

“No.”

“Margaret.”

“No.”

Margaret’s voice became firm.

“If Nathan knows I told anyone, he’ll destroy whatever is left.”

Sophie looked at the recorder.
