Margaret was already awake.
She sat by the window with untouched coffee.
Sophie closed the door.
“I found her name.”
Margaret stood too quickly.
She grabbed the chair.
“What?”
“The woman in the photograph.”
Sophie pulled out her phone.
“She worked at Lakeview Diner.”
Margaret’s lips parted.
“Her name was Claire Mason.”
Margaret went pale.
“Mason.”
“Yes.”
“Carol’s last name.”
“Yes.”
Margaret lowered herself into the chair.
Her hands shook.
“Claire.”
She whispered the name.
“Maybe they changed Emily’s name.”
“That is what I’m thinking.”
Sophie crouched beside her.
“The restaurant manager said Claire left Duluth about six years ago.”
“Do they know where she went?”
“Maybe Minneapolis.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
“She would be forty-seven now.”
Sophie nodded.
“She has children?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Margaret looked at her.
“Find out.”
Sophie did.
Over the next week, she searched public records.
She searched old social media accounts.
