One corner had a huge brown ring, with older stains beneath it layered like marks from glasses left on a table. “It’s fine,” my mother said. “We only sleep here.” I looked at her. “Mom, that mattress is older than my marriage.” She shrugged. “So is your father.” Eventually, I quit arguing. Instead, I ordered a new mattress for Saturday morning. I even paid an additional thirty dollars to have the old one hauled away so there couldn’t be any debate about keeping it somewhere else. The plan was straightforward. Let the delivery guys inside. Take my parents to the beach for a few hours. Come back to a brand-new bed. It was actually a pleasant morning. My father dozed off in a folding chair with a newspaper resting over his face. Around one-thirty, we were sitting outside a little fish restaurant when my phone rang. It wasn’t work. It was the delivery driver calling from the number I’d sent the gate code to. “Sir, we’ve stopped.” I frowned. “Stopped what?” “The mattress is still in the bedroom. We haven’t carried it outside.” I could hear wind behind him and the second mover speaking somewhere nearby. “How far away are you?” he asked. “About forty minutes. Did something break?” “No.” He hesitated. “Nothing’s broken.” I waited. “It’s what was beneath it.” My stomach tightened. “Underneath the mattress?” “Between the mattress and the base.” I heard footsteps. Then a door shutting. “Sir, how long did you say your parents have owned this bed?” “Thirty-one years. Why?” Across the table, my mother was watching me with her glass halfway to her lips. “Just tell me what you discovered.” The mover lowered his voice. “I’m not explaining it over the phone.” He didn’t sound dramatic. He sounded cautious. Like a man standing inside somebody else’s house who had suddenly realized he’d uncovered something he shouldn’t touch. “We’re not moving it,” he continued. “And we’re not touching anything. It stays exactly where it is until you’ve seen it.” “It’s a forty-minute drive.” “Then I’ll wait forty minutes.” There was another silence. I heard the second man say something to him. The driver covered the phone. A few seconds later, he returned. “Sir…” “What?” “Come by yourself.” My stomach dropped. “What do you mean?” “Don’t bring your mother into that bedroom until you’ve looked at it yourself.” I stared across the table. Mom’s expression had shifted. “What did he find?” she asked. I covered the phone. “I don’t know.” Then the mover said something more. Something specific enough that my mother’s face instantly drained of color. She stood so quickly her chair scraped loudly across the pavement. “Give me the keys.” “Mom?” “NOW.” Three minutes later, she was in the car speeding back toward the country house.
