I gave a homeless man a haircut after everyone else in the salon turned him away — when I was done, he smiled and whispered, “There’s something I have to give you.” My shift was nearly over when an elderly man walked into the salon. His clothes appeared worn and dirty, but there was a gentleness in his expression that instantly reminded me of my grandfather. “I have a job interview tomorrow,” he told the woman at reception. “I only have one dollar right now. Could I pay the rest next week?” She looked down at his battered shoes. One sole was coming apart. “A haircut costs fifty dollars. I’m sorry, but you need to leave.” Close by, another stylist quietly shifted her chair slightly farther away. “I can clean the floors,” the man offered. “Please. I haven’t had an interview for months.” Our manager emerged from the back. “You’re delaying customers who can actually afford to pay.” The man carefully folded his dollar and headed for the door. That was when his sleeve slid back. A faded bluebird tattoo appeared on his wrist. My heart dropped. I knew it. My mother, who had died years before, had the identical tattoo. Whenever I questioned her about it as a child, she would cover it with her sleeve and change the conversation. “Wait,” I called out. “I’ll take him.” My manager grabbed my arm. “Fine. But the haircut will come out of your paycheck.” The man slowly settled into my chair as if he feared he didn’t belong. I secured the cape around his neck and started cutting. The whole time, he stared at me through the mirror. More than once, I saw tears forming in his eyes. I couldn’t stop thinking about the bluebird tattoo, but it felt wrong to ask a stranger about something so private. As I brushed away the final hairs near his collar, he suddenly began to cry. At first, I thought he was emotional because someone had finally shown him kindness. I was mistaken. “Your mother made me swear I wouldn’t reach out to you,” he said softly. “But I’m almost out of time.” My hands froze. “What do you mean? Have we met before?” He reached inside his coat, tears still streaming down his face. “I’ve searched for you for years. I was beginning to think I’d never find you.” Then he took something from his pocket and extended it toward me. “There’s something you’re meant to have.” I know you want to discover what happens next, so please be patient and keep reading in the comments below.
