“If I have to do it, then yes,” he would reply.
And this habit saved Margaret from serious complications time and time again over the years.
When he had finished telling his story, the doctor called Robert in and showed him a small injury hidden between Margaret’s toes that no one had noticed.
Robert immediately said:
“From now on, I’m going to check between your toes too.”
“Robert…”
Everyone laughed.
At that moment, Margaret looked at her husband’s aging hands and realized that Robert had never been very good at saying “I love you.”
His love was expressed in a different way: a bright light, a small mirror, and a sentence he repeated every evening:
“Show me your feet.”
