9. Noon Arrived
Cars began pulling into our driveway.
One after another.
Exactly as always.
Linda climbed out wearing an American flag shirt.
Behind her came everyone else.
Children.
Coolers.
Backpacks.
Beach chairs.
Empty hands.
She looked around.
“Where’s the food?”
I smiled warmly.
“It’s a potluck.”
Her face froze.
“What?”
I pointed toward the signs.
Everyone began reading.
The backyard became strangely quiet.
10. The Complaints Started Immediately
“But nobody told us!”
“I thought you were cooking!”
“I skipped breakfast!”
“We drove forty minutes!”
Linda marched toward me.
“This is ridiculous.”
I stayed calm.
“I agree.”
She blinked.
“What?”
“It’s ridiculous expecting one family to feed thirty people every holiday.”
No one spoke.
Not one person.
11. Jake Finally Found His Voice
Then something happened I never expected.
Jake stepped beside me.
He looked directly at his mother.
“Emily’s right.”
Linda stared.
“For years we’ve spent thousands feeding everyone.”
He continued.
“Nobody helps.”
“Nobody brings food.”
“Nobody cleans.”
“We’re done doing that.”
Several relatives looked embarrassed.
Others looked angry.
One cousin quietly whispered,
“I didn’t know.”
Jake nodded.
“Because nobody asked.”
12. The Grocery Store Rush
Silence lasted nearly thirty seconds.
Then one aunt laughed.
“You know what? Fair enough.”
She grabbed her purse.
“I’m buying burgers.”
Another cousin volunteered drinks.
Someone else offered desserts.
Within fifteen minutes…
Half the family had driven to the grocery store.
The other half awkwardly stayed behind helping set tables.
For the first time ever…
People actually worked together.
13. Linda Refused
Only Linda stayed seated.
Arms crossed.
“I’m not rewarding this.”
Nobody answered.
Eventually hunger won.
She climbed into her SUV.
An hour later…
She returned carrying enough fried chicken, salads, fruit, and drinks to feed everyone.
Without saying a word.
