My daughter went to her grandfather’s room every night. One night, I discovered what was really going on there.

“Because your husband left the recordings. He wanted Emily to learn the whole story before you learned the truth.”

Then Emily came up to me.

— Mom…

I knelt before her.

— What else do you know?

The girl wiped her tears.

— I know I have a sister.

I hugged her.

— Why didn’t you tell me?

— Because Grandpa said Dad wanted you to find out at the right time.

I hugged her tighter.

Two years after my husband died, I discovered that he had been keeping a secret from me all this time.

But the next day we found something else.

The key from the metal box fit into a small safe deposit box.

I went there with my father.

There was one photo inside.

There were two girls in the photo.

Emily…

and another girl who looked exactly like her.

On the back my husband wrote:

“If you’re ever ready, find her. But remember—don’t look for her just because she’s your daughter. Look for her because for eight years, someone robbed two sisters of the right to know each other.”

There was an address underneath.

The address of a house only a few dozen kilometers away from us.

I looked at my father.

— We’re going there.

Father nodded.

Emily grabbed my hand.

For the first time I understood why she had been going to Grandpa’s room every evening for so many months.

These weren’t secret meetings.

It wasn’t about anything bad.

My father tried to keep a promise he made to my late husband.

And Emily learned about her family history every night.

The next day we parked in front of a small white house.

I got out of the car.

I walked up to the door.

I raised my hand and knocked.

A woman opened the door.

She looked at me.

Then onto Emily.

Her face suddenly turned pale.

For a few seconds, no one spoke.

Finally the woman whispered:

— It’s impossible…

Emily took a step forward.

— My name is Emily.

The woman started crying.

– I know.

I looked at her in disbelief.

– From where?

The woman wiped her tears.

—Because for the last eight years, someone has been sending me a picture of your daughter every year.

I froze.

— Who?

The woman looked towards the street.

— Your husband.

And then I realized that my husband’s death was not the end of this story.

She was just getting started.
