“She came home.”
“Is she safe?”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“She has a recording you need to hear.”
I forwarded it.
Then sent Sophie and Pauline into the back bedroom.
ADRIAN CAME HOME WHISTLING
Around six, the front door opened.
Adrian walked in carrying his briefcase.
“What smells good?”
I stood at the kitchen counter.
Nothing was cooking.
He noticed the folder.
His smile faded.
I placed one bank statement in front of him.
“Tell me about Sophie’s college account.”
His face shifted.
Surprise.
Calculation.
Then anger.
“Not this again.”
“Tell me.”
“I already showed you.”
“The document you showed me was fake.” Business& Productivity Software
Adrian stared.
“Don’t start, Claire.”
“The fund is empty.”
“Whose name is on the mortgage?”
There it was.
His favorite weapon.
“Whose paycheck keeps this roof over you?”
I didn’t raise my voice.
“Your threats don’t work anymore.”
His expression changed.
I continued.
“You drained my father’s trust.”
“Transferred Sophie’s money.”
“Threatened my daughter.” Family
“And sent the money to Bella.”
For the first time—
Adrian went completely still.
“YOU HAVE NOWHERE TO GO.”
His voice dropped.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I understand perfectly.”
“You’ll destroy this family.”
“No.”
I looked at him.
“You already did.”
Then he tried one final tactic.
The soft voice.
The voice that had pulled me back a hundred times.
“Claire.”
He stepped closer.
“You’ve got nowhere to go.”
I almost smiled.
Then Sophie walked into the hallway.
Pauline in her arms.
Adrian’s face drained of color.
Sophie held up the recorder.
Then pressed Play.
His own voice filled the house on Willowcrest Lane.
Threatening her.
Threatening me.
