A woman returned from a trip to discover her mother-in-law had changed the lock on her bedroom door. But when she was finally let inside, an unexpected discovery sparked accusations and sent her husband into a panic. What was he desperately searching for?
For weeks, my MIL, Linda, had been acting strangely around me.
Every time I checked my phone, she’d watch me.
If I came home late, she’d ask where I’d been.
Finally, I confronted her.
“Is there something you want to ask me?”
She smiled.
“No, sweetheart. Not yet.”
I had no idea what that meant.
A few days later, my husband, Mark, and I left town for a short trip.
Linda immediately offered to watch our house.
“Don’t worry about anything. I’ll take care of everything.”
When we came home, she was already waiting for us.
I carried my suitcase upstairs and tried to open our bedroom door.
My key wouldn’t turn.
“Mark?” I called out.
He tried his.
Nothing.
Then Linda appeared at the top of the stairs.
She was holding a key I’d never seen before.
“Mom,” Mark said. “Why is there a new lock on our bedroom?”
“I needed to make sure neither of you went in before we had this conversation.”
My stomach did a flip.
“What conversation?”
Linda looked at me.
“I think it’s time my son learned the truth.”
“What truth?”
Instead of answering, she unlocked the door.
We followed her inside.
She walked straight to our sofa and pulled back one of the pillows.
A pair of men’s underwear was underneath it.
My heart stopped.
Mark stared at them.
Then he looked at me.
“What the hell is that?”
“I have no idea.”
Linda crossed her arms.
“Really?”
I turned to her.
“What is that supposed to mean soly
“Mom.”
“I took it.”
I looked between them.
“Can somebody please explain why my husband had a secret envelope hidden in our bedroom?”
Mark closed his eyes.
Linda said, “Ask him.”
He looked at her.
“Was there a key inside?”
She didn’t answer.
“Mom, was there a key?”
“Yes.”
Mark went pale.
“And an address?”
Linda’s silence gave him the answer.
He whispered something under his breath.
Then louder, “Where is the key?”
“I don’t have it.”
His head snapped up.
“What do you mean you don’t have it?”
“I used it.”
For a second, even I forgot about the underwear.
Mark stared at his mother.
“You used it where?”
Linda lifted her chin.
“I went to the address.”
Mark actually stepped backward.
“You went there?”
“Yes.”
His face lost all color.
“And now maybe you’ll explain why your brother opened the door.”
My stomach dropped.
Brother?
I knew Mark had a brother.
Ryan.
But in 11 years of marriage, I had never met him.
Mark barely spoke about him.
What I did know was ugly.
Their father had died years earlier.
Money disappeared from the estate.
Ryan had access to the account.
Linda said he took it.
Mark said Ryan left soon afterward and cut contact.
As far as I knew, neither of them had seen him in years.
I stared at my husband.
“Your brother?”
Mark looked at me.
I saw the answer before he gave it.
“Yes.”
“Ryan is here?”
He nodded.
“How long have you known?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“A few months.”
Linda made a broken sound.
“A few months?”
Mark looked at her.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
?”
“I found them while you two were away.”
“What?”
“In your bedroom. And they obviously don’t belong to my son.”
I stared at her.
“Are you accusing me of cheating on my husband?”
“I’ve suspected something was going on for weeks. The secretive phone calls. Coming home late. And now this.”
“Those aren’t mine! I’ve never seen them before!”
Linda shook her head.
“Of course that’s what you’d say.”
I felt my face getting hot.
“You went through my bedroom while we were gone, changed the lock, and now you’re standing here accusing me of bringing another man into my house?”
“I didn’t put those underwear there.”
“Yes, you did! You had this whole thing planned!”
Linda and I were practically shouting at each other now.
But Mark hadn’t said a word.
I turned to him.
“Why are you so quiet? Say soly something!”
He barely seemed to hear me.
While Linda and I had been arguing, he’d moved to the nightstand.
He opened one drawer.
Then another.
“Mark, what are you doing?”
He ignored me and yanked open the bottom drawer.
Suddenly, he started pulling things out and throwing them onto the floor.
“Where is it?”
Linda frowned.
“Where’s what?”
He didn’t answer.
He checked the drawer again, helala boys then dropped to his knees and looked under the nightstand.
I’d never seen him panic like that.
Linda and I looked at each other.
Something in her expression made Mark stop searching.
He looked up at her.
“Mom… what did you do?!”
The room went silent.
Linda’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?”
Mark stood.
“There was an envelope in this drawer.”
I stared at him.
“What envelope?”
He ignored me again.
“Where is it?”
Linda folded her arms.
“I found several things while I was cleaning.”
“You weren’t cleaning. You were searching.”
“I had reason to.”
“Where’s the envelope?”
She hesitated.
That was enough.
Mark stepped closer.
