My own father smashed a brick into my face because my fiancé refused to leave me for my younger sister

“But the face they tried to ruin became the face that told the truth.”

My mother looked away.

My father did not.

He stared at me with hatred until the guards led him out.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.

One shouted, “Sadie, what will you do with the treatment?”

I looked at Walter, Margaret, Wyatt, and Melanie.

Then I announced the decision none of the corporations expected.

I would give it away.

Not to Virex.

Not to the military.

Not to a private buyer.

The trust’s fortune would create the Harold Davis Foundation for Regenerative Medicine.

The research would be shared through nonprofit hospitals under strict ethical oversight.

No company would own it.

No family would profit from suffering.

And no child would ever become property.

The crowd erupted.

Wyatt leaned close.

“Your grandfather would be proud.”

I smiled.

“I hope so.”

But Walter’s expression remained troubled.

“What is it?” I asked.

He handed me one final envelope discovered in Grandpa’s safe-deposit box.

It contained a birth certificate.

My name was printed on it.

But Arthur and Marianne Davis were not listed as my parents.

I stared at the two unfamiliar names.

Then I looked at Walter.

“Who are they?”

His answer stole the breath from my lungs.

“Your real parents.”

PART 8

THE DAUGHTER THEY NEVER KNEW SURVIVED

The woman named on my birth certificate was Claire Bennett.

The father was Dr. Elias Bennett, a neurologist who had worked beside my grandfather.

According to Walter, my biological parents had helped create the treatment.

“They discovered Virex planned to weaponize the research,” he explained. “They intended to expose the company.”

“What happened to them?”

“Their car went off a bridge when you were eight months old.”

I already knew the answer before asking.

“It wasn’t an accident.”

“No.”

My chest hollowed.

“Then how did I become Arthur and Marianne’s daughter?”

“Your grandfather believed Virex would kill you if they knew you survived. Arthur was Harold’s son. He agreed to raise you under a new identity.”

“He agreed because Grandpa paid him.”

Walter’s silence confirmed it.

My entire childhood had been a transaction.

Melanie reached for my hand.

“Were they ever kind to you?”

The question was more painful than I expected.

“Sometimes.”
