Her eyes filled with tears.
“My sister called you Sadie before she died,” she whispered. “She said it meant princess.”
I stood slowly.
“You knew who I was at the hospital.”
“I suspected. The scar behind your ear matched the one described in Claire’s notes. But I needed proof.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because everyone else had already used the truth to control you.”
She stepped closer.
“I wanted the choice to be yours.”
I studied her face.
The shape of her eyes.
The curve of her mouth.
Pieces of myself lived there.
Then she opened her arms.
I crossed the room and held the aunt I never knew existed.
She smelled faintly of soap and hospital antiseptic.
I wept for my parents.
For Grandpa.
For the child I had been.
And for the family I had found after believing mine had been destroyed.
