Emma thought for a moment.
— Can I have two moms?
The woman who adopted her started crying.
Caroline too.
“I think we can find a way for you to have lots of people who love you,” she replied.
From that day on, everything began to change.
Emma and Luke started seeing each other regularly.
Their bond slowly rebuilt.
Caroline also became friends with Emma’s family.
For the first time in many years, her home began to feel full of life again.
Laughter.
Conversations.
Shoes left at the door.
Cups on the table.
Music coming from Luke’s room.
And Emma’s voice calling from the corridor:
— Caroline, where are my shoes?!
One evening Caroline stood in the doorway of the living room.
Luke was sitting on the couch.
Emma lay next to him.
They both watched a movie.
Luke looked at Caroline.
— You know what’s weird?
— Co?
— I used to think that if I loved a new family, I would lose the old one.
Caroline sat down next to him.
— And now?
Luke smiled.
— Now I know that family doesn’t have to mean choosing one person over another.
Caroline looked at him.
— Your brothers would be proud of you.
Luke lowered his gaze.
– Do you think?
— I’m sure of it.
The boy was silent for a moment.
Then he put his head on her shoulder.
— Mom?
— No?
— Thank you for not giving me up.
Caroline felt tears in her eyes.
— Thank you for letting me be your mom.
Luke smiled.
And Caroline, for the first time since the deaths of her sons, understood something important.
You can’t replace a lost child.
You can’t turn back time.
But the human heart can expand.
And sometimes family comes into our lives not in the way we expected…
but exactly when we need it most.
A Luke?
After ten failed adoption attempts, he finally found a home.
But the greatest miracle was that Emma found him along with him.
And for the first time in many years, Caroline’s house was no longer silent.
