Ryan had not found me by chance.
The thought moved slowly through me, too large to take in all at once. My job at the Caldwell estate, Ryan’s employment, my debt, the woman in Julian’s room—threads I had believed belonged to separate pieces of my life were beginning to knot together.
Outside the window, snow covered the garden paths until every direction looked erased.
I dressed carefully, wincing as fabric brushed my bruised throat. The hallway beyond my room was quiet, but not empty. A security guard stood near the stairwell and nodded politely when I opened the door.
“Ms. Carter, Mr. Cho asked that you remain in the guest wing.”
“I need to speak with Ethan.”
“Mr. Caldwell is in a meeting.”
“With who?”
The guard hesitated.
That was answer enough.
I stepped back into my room, closed the door, and looked again at Ethan’s note.
I’ll explain when I can.
I had spent too long waiting for other people to decide when I was allowed to know the truth.
On the writing desk was a house phone. I picked it up and dialed the only extension I knew by heart.
The kitchen.
Mrs. Alvarez answered on the second ring.
“Kitchen.”
“It’s Ivy.”
“Are you all right?”
“Yes. But I need a favor.”
A pause. “That sentence has never once led to peace.”
“I need to know where Mr. Caldwell is meeting Daniel.”
“Ivy—”
“Please.”
She was silent long enough that I heard someone laughing faintly in the background downstairs.
Then she sighed.
“West study. But you did not hear that from me.”
“Thank you.”
“And Ivy?”
“Yes?”
“Take the back stairs. The main hall carries sound.”
I smiled despite everything.
The back stairs were narrow and meant for staff, tucked behind a tapestry of hunters chasing a stag through a forest. I moved slowly, one hand on the rail, listening at every landing.
Voices reached me before I reached the west study.
Ethan’s first.
Controlled, but edged.
“How much did she access?”
Daniel answered. “Enough to know Ivy Carter’s debt, address, employment history, and next of kin status.”
My hand tightened on the banister.
A woman spoke next. Priya.
“The hospital claims the files were accessed for routine account review.”
“That’s convenient,” Ethan said.
Daniel continued. “Elise Warren now works for Marcus Vale.”
The staffing man.
I closed my eyes.
Priya said, “Then Ryan entering your employment may not have been random.”
“No,” Ethan said. “It was targeted.”
Targeted.
The word pressed all the air from my lungs.
Then Julian spoke, surprising me. “Targeted at Ivy or at Ethan?”
Silence.
Ethan said, “Explain.”
Julian’s voice was quieter than before. “Think about it. A woman tied to Ryan gets access to my phone. Ryan uses my code. Ivy gets hurt on Ethan’s property. If this becomes public, it isn’t just a crime. It’s a scandal. Negligent billionaire. Unsafe estate. Staff abuse. Brother’s access involved.”
Priya said, “That would damage the foundation launch.”
“What foundation launch?” Daniel asked.
Ethan did not answer immediately.
Julian did.
“Clara House,” he said. “Ethan’s new employee housing and emergency care nonprofit. It launches Friday.”
My breath caught.
Clara. His mother.
