The black box arrived at St. Matthew’s just as my sister began walking down the aisle.

I looked away.

“Is Vanessa involved in the fraud?”

“We don’t know.”

“You must know something.”

“She signed contracts.”

“Did she understand them?”

“She says no.”

“She always says no.”

“I know.”

For the first time, my father sounded tired of protecting her.

That did not mean he would stop.

“Will you testify truthfully?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Even if it harms her?”

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

I did not believe him completely.

But I believed he wanted to believe himself.

Before leaving, he placed another envelope on the table.

“What is that?”

“Your grandfather’s original trust agreement.”

I stared.

“I asked for it for months.”

“I know.”

“Why now?”

“Because it proves the disputed shares were protected from transfer without independent trustee approval.”

“Was there approval?”

“No.”

“Then my shares remain mine.”

“Yes.”

The word entered the room quietly.

Twenty-two percent of Bellamy Holdings.

Voting rights.

Dividends.

Authority my family had pretended no longer existed.

I touched the envelope.

“You knew this before coming?”

“I learned this morning.”

“Who told you?”

“Outside counsel.”

“The old general counsel?”

“He resigned last night.”

“Why?”

“He admitted Adrian pressured him to process the transfer.”

“Did you pressure him too?”

My father looked at me.

“Yes.”

That answer mattered more than the others.

He left without asking me to forgive him.

Vanessa came two days later.

She did not request permission.

She waited outside the building until another resident opened the lobby door, then pounded on mine.

I opened it only after Miriam arrived.

Vanessa stood in the hallway wearing dark glasses and a black coat.

Her wedding ring was gone.

“You sent it.”

“Yes.”

She removed the glasses.

Her eyes were swollen.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three weeks before the wedding.”

She stared.

“You let me keep planning.”

“Yes.”

“You let me walk into that church.”
