The Home Date Test: Laura’s Dignity and a Woman’s Redemption

The Home Date Test: Laura’s Dignity and a Woman’s Redemption.

I was carefully preparing for a proper, elegant evening date, not just a quick coffee at the station café or the usual casual stroll in the city park. Stefano and I had met about two months earlier through mutual friends at a cultural event, and little by little, we were building a friendship that seemed truly promising to me. He was in his forties, a successful financial advisor, and always projected the reassuring image of a calm, distinguished, well-mannered, and self-confident man who knew exactly what he wanted from life and from a future partner.

For this reason, I was genuinely delighted when he called me one afternoon, proposing, for the first time, an invitation to dinner at his private home. “Laura, at my house we’ll be decidedly more quiet and private. We’ll be able to converse without the annoying buzz of crowded places and get to know each other much better,” he said in a persuasive and polite tone. The idea immediately struck me as romantic and appealing. I even bought a refined box of artisanal chocolates that he’d mentioned in passing during one of our first conversations, and I went to his place in a high spirits.

The dating test: Arriving at the apartment and the unexpected atmosphere

It was the first time I’d ever stepped through the doors of his house, so I was inevitably a little excited, happy, and nervous. Deep down, I thought that this special evening could represent an important and significant step in strengthening our budding relationship. Stefano greeted me at the front door with a warm smile and immediately paid me a couple of elegant compliments on my evening dress.

The apartment appeared modern, well-furnished, clean, and quite welcoming, though the air inside the rooms felt strangely heavy and a bit stale, as if the windows hadn’t been opened in days. In the living room, I immediately noticed a table clearly set with care: there were two fluted crystal glasses and a vase of fresh flowers, but there was no sign of food or the smell of ready-made dishes. “Is dinner still being prepared?” I asked, smiling wryly. “I have to admit, the wait has made me quite hungry.” “Of course,” Stefano replied with disconcerting calm and casualness. “Come into the kitchen.”

I followed him slowly down the hallway and stopped, literally transfixed, at the kitchen door. On the center table were grocery bags still brimming with raw ingredients: soiled vegetables unwashed, raw meat uncut, and a plethora of various condiments scattered haphazardly. Days’ worth of dirty dishes piled up next to the sink, and a few household items were scattered here and there, as if the mess had been orchestrated by a calculating hand. “Here you go,” Stefano exclaimed, his expression visibly satisfied and a hint of palpable presumption. “Everything we need is already ready for us tonight.”

I looked at him perplexed, then returned my gaze to the utter chaos on the counter in the room. “Necessary for what, exactly?” I asked, trying with all my might to remain calm. He smiled condescendingly and explained without the slightest hesitation: “I want to understand concretely how you behave in daily life. I need a pure, active woman at my side, who knows how to take care of the house and take care of her man. I’m not looking for a superficial relationship where we just have fun together in restaurants.”
