The millionaire set out to fire her employee for repeated absences… but the moment she opened that door, she uncovered a truth her life of luxury had never prepared her for.

Because some wounds do not disappear when the hospital bills are paid.

Some wounds live inside people for years.

And three months after Elena’s treatment began, Laura discovered another truth Carlos had hidden from everyone.

A truth far more painful than poverty.

It happened on a rainy Tuesday.

Laura was reviewing contracts in her office when Patricia entered quietly.

“There’s… a problem.”

Laura barely looked up.

“What now?”

Patricia hesitated.

“It’s Carlos.”

That made her pause.

“What happened?”

Patricia swallowed hard.

“He collapsed this morning while cleaning the west tower.”

Laura stood immediately.

Twenty minutes later she walked into the emergency room of Saint Gabriel Hospital.

Carlos sat on the bed, pale and exhausted.

The doctor closed the chart slowly.

“He’s severely malnourished,” the doctor explained.

“And dangerously sleep deprived.”

Laura frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense. We increased his salary.”

Carlos lowered his eyes.

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

“He’s been skipping meals.”

Silence.

Laura turned sharply toward Carlos.

“Why?”

Carlos said nothing.

“Carlos.”

Finally, he whispered:

“Because the children eat first.”

The words hit her harder than she expected.

The doctor continued.

“He’s also been ignoring chest pain for months.”

Laura crossed her arms tightly.

“Months?”

Carlos gave a weak smile.

“Pain becomes normal after a while.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Rain tapped softly against the hospital window.

Laura looked at the man sitting in front of her.

This was the same employee she once considered replaceable.

Now she could barely recognize the person she used to be.

Then the doctor said something else.

“There’s another issue.”

Laura looked up.

“He refused the surgery.”

Her expression hardened.

“What surgery?”
