Sexual Activity and Pelvic Health

Another popular misconception is that not having sex causes the reproductive organs to “stop working.”

That is not how the body works.

A person does not need sexual intercourse to maintain the basic function of their reproductive organs.

For people with vaginas, vaginal health can change because of factors such as age, hormonal changes, pregnancy, menopause, certain medications, and medical conditions.

For people with penises, erectile function can also change over time, but this is influenced by cardiovascular health, medications, hormones, psychological factors, and many other variables.

Sexual inactivity by itself should not be treated as a direct cause of disease.

Masturbation Is a Personal Choice

People who are not having sex may or may not masturbate.

Masturbation is a normal behavior for many adults, but it is not medically required.

Some people find it pleasurable or relaxing, while others have little interest in it.

There is no single correct frequency.

As with partnered sex, the important consideration is whether the behavior is comfortable and does not interfere with daily responsibilities, relationships, or personal wellbeing.

Relationships Can Change

For people in relationships, a long period without sex may sometimes become an important relationship issue.

The problem is usually not simply the absence of sexual activity. Instead, partners may have different expectations about intimacy.

One partner may view sex as an important expression of love, while the other may place greater importance on emotional connection, conversation, or nonsexual affection.

If the difference is not discussed, resentment can develop.

Open communication can help couples understand what each person needs and why their desires may differ.

There is no universal solution, but honest conversation can prevent assumptions from becoming larger problems.
