Why Giving Dogs Space Matters
Dogs communicate differently from humans.
A dog that feels uncomfortable may show signs such as:
- Turning its head away
- Avoiding eye contact
- Trying to move away
- Flattening its ears
- Tucking its tail
- Licking its lips
- Yawning
- Becoming unusually still
- Barking or growling
These behaviors can indicate that the animal is uncomfortable or overwhelmed.
Giving the dog more distance can allow it to relax instead of feeling trapped.
Teaching Children About Yellow-Ribbon Dogs
This is especially important for families.
Children naturally want to touch and play with dogs they encounter during walks. But children may not recognize subtle signs of canine discomfort.
Parents and caregivers can teach children a simple rule:
If you see a yellow ribbon, don’t approach the dog.
Children should also
learn that they shouldn’t run toward unfamiliar dogs, hug them, pull their tails, or put their faces close to an animal’s face.
