Lucas still calls her Mom.
He calls me Claire most of the time.
Sometimes “Mom Claire.”
The first time it happened, he did not even notice.
He shouted from upstairs:
“Mom Claire, where’s my blue sweatshirt?”
I stood frozen in the kitchen.
Rachel looked at me.
Neither of us said anything.
Then she smiled.
I went upstairs to find the sweatshirt.
I do not need a title to prove what Lucas is to me.
I lost eight years.
That fact does not become prettier because we found each other.
I missed his first word.
His first day of kindergarten.
The first time he lost a tooth.
I missed the night he had pneumonia and Rachel slept sitting upright beside his hospital bed.
I missed years I cannot recover.
But recovery is not always the same thing as replacement.
Sometimes it means building something beside the damage.
Something new.
Something true.
