I often wondered how I would have coped with those first difficult months without him.
One evening I asked a question that I had previously been afraid to say out loud.
“Ashton, have you ever regretted marrying me?”
He immediately turned towards me.
“Why do you ask that?”
“Because our lives are completely different now.”
He took my hands.
“Sutton, I married you because I love you. Your eyesight was never the reason.”
For a long time these words gave me strength.
But about six months ago, something started to change.
Ashton began coming home from work exhausted and impatient. Conversations that had once been easy became tense. Minor disagreements escalated into arguments.
One evening I accidentally knocked over a glass of water.
“Sutton, could you be more careful?” he growled.
I froze.
He apologized almost immediately.
But then I started noticing other things.
Sometimes, when I asked for help, he would sigh before answering. At dinner, he sometimes seemed distracted or withdrawn.
