Flight of Truth: The decision to remain calm for Leonardo’s sake.
During the flight, I stood still, fighting back the tears that were trying to escape. My absolute priority in that moment was protecting little Leonardo, who stared at me silently, clutching a sketch of “the world’s greatest pilot” to his chest. I stroked his head wordlessly, trying to instill in him a sense of security I felt I had completely lost.
Upon arrival at Rome Fiumicino Airport, I waited until all the passengers had disembarked before leaving my seat. I had no intention of confronting Robert in the departure lounge or causing a disturbance in front of my son. Maintaining impeccable composure, I took Leonardo’s hand and disembarked the plane.
Before leaving the airport, I asked Leonardo to hand the drawing to the flight attendant at the gate, asking her to pass it directly to the captain. On the back of the card, I wrote a short, concise sentence in ballpoint pen: “Your son and I were at the back of the plane. Don’t bother returning to Milan tonight. You’ll find your bags on the landing.”
