“That is fair.”

The final paragraph was shorter.

I am not ready to call you Mom.

But I would like to meet you.

Margaret broke down.

Sophie wrapped both arms around her.

Margaret laughed and cried at the same time.

“She wants to meet me.”

“Yes.”

“She wants to meet me.”

The meeting was arranged for the following Saturday.

Margaret changed clothes four times.

She hated every blouse.

She complained about her hair.

She rejected two pairs of shoes.

Sophie finally laughed.

“You’re acting like you’re going on a first date.”

Margaret glared at her.

“This is more important.”

“I know.”

“What if she doesn’t recognize me?”

“She has seen pictures.”

“What if she changes her mind?”

“Then we’ll handle it.”

“What if I say the wrong thing?”

“You probably will.”

Margaret stared.

Sophie smiled.

“Everyone says the wrong thing sometimes.”

Margaret laughed despite herself.
