I lost one of my twin babies during labor when the nurse placed my surviving son in my arms, she leaned in and whispered, “Watch the video I just sent you before you trust your husband.”

The next several days were exhausting, but far less dramatic than Wendy had apparently expected.

There were meetings.

Questions.

Paperwork.

Hospital administrators reviewed the records.

My attorney reviewed the documents Mark had signed.

The temporary placement process was stopped.

No final transfer had occurred.

My second son remained under hospital care until he was medically cleared to leave with me.

And when that day finally arrived, I walked out of the hospital with both of my boys.

Martin.

And Leo.

Together.

Mark and I separated shortly afterward.

I wasn’t interested in revenge.

I didn’t want a public spectacle.

I wanted clear boundaries, accurate records, and legal decisions made properly.

My attorney handled the rest.

The questionable paperwork was formally challenged.

Any authority Mark had attempted to exercise without my knowledge was reviewed.

Eventually, custody arrangements were established with the children’s well-being as the priority.

Wendy was no longer permitted to make decisions involving the boys.

And Mark finally had to accept that being frightened or pressured did not give him the right to exclude me from decisions about our children.

SIX MONTHS LATER

Morning sunlight filled the nursery in my new home.

Martin and Leo were asleep in their cribs.

Healthy.

Growing.

Together.

I sat beside them with a cup of coffee while Judy visited.

After everything that happened, we had stayed in touch.

She smiled down at the twins.

“They’ve gotten so big.”

“I know.”
