I know exactly what most people think when they see our photo.
Yes, he is 75 years older than me .
And yes, I fell in love with him.
Not because anyone forced me to. Not because I had some secret agenda. And certainly not because I was looking for money.
My name is Sophie . I was 24 when I met William .
At the time I had no idea who he really was.
I was a university student and worked three days a week at a small coffee shop near campus. Every Tuesday, William would come in at almost the same time, sit by the window, and order a black coffee with no sugar.
For the first two months I simply called him “Mr. William.”
He was quiet and polite. He never tried to impress me. He asked about my studies, the books I was reading, and why I worked so many hours.
One afternoon I laughed and said:
“You’re the only customer who asks me about books and not the Wi-Fi password.”
He smiled.
Then we started talking more.
One rainy evening after my shift, my bus was almost forty minutes late. I was standing outside when William showed up.
He didn’t offer me money or a ride.
He just stood next to me and held half the umbrella above me.
We talked for almost two hours.
This is how it all started.
Three months later I realized I was waiting for his calls.
And that scared me.
William was 99 years old.
I was 24 years old.
At first I didn’t even tell my friends about it.
But the age difference wasn’t the biggest surprise.
For the first six months of our relationship, I had no idea William was so rich.
I thought he was just a retiree who lived alone, loved old books, and drank cheap black coffee.
Then he invited me to his house.
The moment I stepped inside, I froze.
The house was enormous. There were expensive paintings, beautiful furniture, a huge garden, staff, and even a driver.
I turned to him.
“William… who exactly are you?”
He laughed.
A week later I met his three children.
And from that moment on, everything changed.
All three were older than me.
His eldest daughter, Diane , shook my hand and looked at me carefully.
“My father is a very generous man,” she said. “I hope you don’t intend to take advantage of that.”
I pretended not to understand.
But I understood perfectly.
Then came the questions.
Where did I live?
How much did I earn?
Did I have debts?
Why would a 24-year-old woman want a 99-year-old man?
One evening Diane finally said it outright.
“You can tell anyone any romantic story you want. But I know what you’re waiting for.”
She meant his money.
I didn’t say anything.
There was no point in arguing.
Two weeks later William unexpectedly came to my apartment.
The moment I opened the door I knew something was wrong.
He looked exhausted.
He sat down at my small kitchen table, was silent for a long time, and then finally said:
“Sophie… I have to tell you something.”
I sat down opposite him.
His hands were shaking.
“I lost almost everything.”
I froze.
“Investments. Mostly business. House may be sold.”
Then he looked straight at me.
