The Millionaire Who Went to Fire Her Employee — But What She Found Behind His Door Changed Everything

The weeks that followed changed everything.

Elena finally began receiving consistent medical care.

Her treatment was carefully monitored, and the family no longer had to choose between basic necessities and getting her to the hospital.

Laura also made sure Carlos kept his job.

In fact, she increased his salary.

She told him it was not charity.

It was recognition.

“You’ve been doing the work of three people while carrying an entire family on your shoulders,” she told him.

Carlos simply nodded.

“Thank you, ma’am.”

But Laura noticed something.

Even after Elena’s condition began improving, Carlos never seemed to rest.

He still worked.

He still cared for the children.

He still accompanied Elena to appointments.

He still arrived early.

He still stayed late when someone else couldn’t cover a shift.

Whenever Laura asked him if he was okay, he gave the same answer.

“I’m fine.”

She knew better now.

Three months passed.

One rainy Tuesday morning, Laura was sitting in her office reviewing contracts when Patricia entered quietly.

There was something wrong with her expression.

“Laura…”

Laura looked up.

“What happened?”

Patricia hesitated.

“There’s a problem.”

Laura put down her pen.

“What kind of problem?”

Patricia swallowed.

“It’s Carlos.”

Laura immediately stood.

“What happened to him?”

“He collapsed this morning.”

Laura froze.

“Where?”

“While cleaning the west tower.”

For a moment, Laura couldn’t speak.

“Which hospital?”

“Saint Gabriel.”

Twenty minutes later, Laura was walking through the emergency department.

She found Carlos sitting on a hospital bed.

His face was pale.

His uniform was still damp from the rain.

He looked exhausted.

The doctor stood beside him holding the medical chart.

“He’s severely malnourished,” the doctor explained.

Laura frowned.

“Malnourished?”

Carlos lowered his eyes.

The doctor continued.

“And he’s dangerously sleep-deprived.”

Laura looked at Carlos.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

She turned toward the doctor.

“We increased his salary. He has food now.”

The doctor looked at Carlos.

“He has money for food.”

Then he looked back at Laura.

“But apparently, he doesn’t spend it on himself.”

Laura’s expression hardened.

She turned toward Carlos.

“Why?”

Carlos said nothing.

“Carlos.”

Still nothing.

Finally, the doctor answered for him.

“He’s been skipping meals.”

Laura stared at Carlos.

“For how long?”

Carlos shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

He gave a tired smile.

“Sometimes I forget to eat.”

Laura knew that wasn’t the truth.

She stepped closer.

“Carlos.”

His eyes met hers.

“Why?”

His voice was barely audible.

“Because the children eat first.”

Laura felt the words hit her harder than she expected.

The doctor continued.

“He’s also been ignoring chest pain for months.”

Laura’s eyes widened.

“Months?”

Carlos looked away.

“It wasn’t that bad.”

“Chest pain is not something you ignore.”

“I had things to do.”

Laura stared at him.

“You could have died.”

Carlos shrugged weakly.

“I couldn’t afford to stop.”

The doctor looked at Laura.

“There is another issue.”

Laura turned.

“What?”

He hesitated.

“He needs surgery.”

Carlos immediately shook his head.

“No.”

Laura looked at him.

“What do you mean, no?”

“I can’t.”

The doctor sighed.

“If you continue working like this without treatment, the problem could become much more serious.”

Carlos looked down.

“I understand.”

“Then why refuse?”

Carlos finally looked at Laura.

And this time, she saw something she had never seen in him before.

Fear.

Not fear of the operation.

Fear of what would happen to his family if he stopped working.

“I can’t be away from work,” he whispered.

Laura stared at him.

After everything she had done for his family, she thought perhaps she finally understood the man sitting before her.

But she was wrong.

Because Carlos was hiding one more thing.

And this time, it could cost him his life.
