Laura pulled a chair closer to the hospital bed.
“Tell me everything.”
Carlos shook his head.
“There isn’t anything else.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
He looked surprised.
“You’ve been hiding things from everyone for years,” Laura said. “I understand why you did it before.”
She paused.
“But you don’t have to do it anymore.”
Carlos looked toward the hospital window.
Rain was running down the glass.
Finally, he whispered,
“If I stay here, who takes care of them?”
“Your wife is receiving treatment.”
“The children still need me.”
“You have family.”
Carlos gave a bitter smile.
“My sister was the only family I had nearby.”
He looked down at his hands.
“When she died, those children became my responsibility.”
Laura was silent.
Carlos continued.
“I promised her.”
“Promised her what?”
“That I would never let them feel abandoned.”
His voice trembled.
“So I work.”
He took a breath.
“I work at night. I sleep when I can. I take Elena to treatment. I cook. I take the children to school. Then I come here.”
He looked at Laura.
“And I do it again.”
Laura’s eyes filled with tears.
“How long have you been living like this?”
Carlos looked away.
“Almost two years.”
“Two years?”
He nodded.
Laura couldn’t understand how someone could survive that long under such pressure.
Then the doctor entered the room again.
“Mr. Rodríguez, we need your decision.”
Carlos immediately answered.
“I can’t have the surgery.”
The doctor looked at Laura.
She understood.
This wasn’t going to be solved by simply telling Carlos what to do.
So she asked him one question.
“What would your wife want?”
Carlos froze.
Laura continued.
“If Elena were standing here right now, what would she tell you?”
Carlos’s eyes filled with tears.
“She’d tell me to go.”
“Then listen to her.”
He shook his head.
“I can’t leave them.”
“You’re not leaving them.”
Laura stood.
“You’re getting better so you can come back to them.”
Carlos looked confused.
“What about the bills?”
“I’ll handle them.”
“What about the children?”
“I’ll make sure they’re taken care of.”
“And my job?”
“You still have it.”
Carlos stared at her.
“You’d do all that?”
Laura smiled sadly.
“You once thought I would fire you because you were absent.”
Carlos looked down.
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
Laura took a breath.
“And I was wrong too.”
He looked up.
“I thought your absences were a lack of responsibility.”
She shook her head.
“They were proof of how much responsibility you were carrying.”
Carlos’s eyes filled with tears.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then he finally nodded.
“Okay.”
The doctor smiled.
“We’ll schedule the procedure.”
The following morning, Carlos was taken into surgery.
Laura stayed at the hospital.
She could have returned to her office.
She had meetings.
Contracts.
Deals.
People waiting for her decisions.
But none of them mattered.
For four hours, she sat outside the operating room.
And while she waited, she thought about the man she had once planned to fire.
A man she had considered replaceable.
A man whose absence had annoyed her.
Now she was sitting outside an operating room praying he would come back to his family.
When the doctor finally appeared, Laura stood immediately.
“How is he?”
The doctor smiled.
“The surgery went well.”
Laura closed her eyes.
For the first time that day, she breathed normally.
But when Carlos finally opened his eyes, the first thing he asked wasn’t about himself.
It was about Elena.
And that was when Laura understood just how deeply this man had been carrying everyone else.
