The Shadow Under the Sleeves: A Secret Kept for Years

If he made a sudden movement toward her, I’d see her visibly flinch. One day, while I was eavesdropping on their hushed conversation in the kitchen, I heard her say, “I absolutely don’t want the kids ever to find out.” My father replied peremptorily, “Then we’ll make sure they never find out.”

That fragment of conversation was the confirmation I’d been looking for. In my mind, the reconstruction was now complete. I began to look at Roberto with contempt and detachment. He’d always been a caring and affectionate father to me, but I knew well that people can put on a completely different face when the doors to their home close. My anger toward him grew day by day.

One evening, taking advantage of the fact that Roberto was still working in the workshop, I decided to address the issue once and for all. My heart was pounding. “Why are you asking me something like that?” she whispered. “Your clothes, your long sleeves even in the heat, the way you flinch when Dad speaks loudly… You always look at him before answering! Tell me the truth, please!” I exclaimed, bursting into tears of relief. My mother paled visibly, took my hands, and said something that shocked me: “Did you really think that about your father all these years?”

Lucia sat on the edge of the bed and undid the buttons on her left cuff, slowly pulling off the sleeve of her blouse. I gasped. There were no recent bruises or signs of beatings on her skin, but a vast, deep burn scar that ran from her wrist to her shoulder, completely altering the texture of her skin.

“When you were three years old,” my mother explained, her eyes shining, “there was a short circuit in your bedroom during the night. A fire had started in the crib. Your father and I rushed inside. To pick you up and protect you from the flames as we left, I shielded you with my left arm. The flames burned me badly.”

She continued her story, explaining that Roberto had suffered from a tremendous sense of guilt for not being able to prevent her from hurting herself.
