There are television performers who become famous.
Then there are performers who become part of people’s memories.
Randolph Mantooth belonged to the second group.
For millions of viewers, his name will forever be associated with Johnny Gage, the firefighter-paramedic he portrayed on the landmark television series Emergency!.
Mantooth died on July 9, 2026, at the age of 80. His family said he had been dealing with a long illness, and reports said he died in Ventura, California, surrounded by loved ones.
The news brought sadness not only to generations of television viewers but also to firefighters, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals who considered Mantooth something more than an actor.
He had portrayed an emergency responder on television.
But after Emergency! ended, he spent decades supporting the real people who performed that work.
That became one of the defining features of his life.
Mantooth’s passing therefore marks the end of a remarkable acting career while also closing a chapter in television history.
