The Man Behind Johnny Gage
Randolph Mantooth was born on September 19, 1945, in Sacramento, California.
He was the eldest of four children, and his father’s work meant that the family moved during his childhood. Eventually, the family settled in the Santa Barbara area, where Mantooth’s interest in acting began to develop.
He studied at Santa Barbara City College and later earned a scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
Acting was not something he simply fell into because television needed another handsome young performer.
It was an ambition he had pursued seriously.
His early career included appearances on programs such as Adam-12 and Marcus Welby, M.D. before the role that would define much of his public identity arrived.
That role was Johnny Gage.
And everything changed.
When Emergency! Arrived
Emergency! premiered in 1972 at a fascinating moment in American medical history.
Modern emergency medical services were still developing.
