Emergency! did exactly that.
Mantooth gave a face to the emerging profession of paramedicine.
People watched Johnny Gage treat patients and respond to emergencies.
And in doing so, viewers became familiar with the idea that emergency medicine could begin before a patient arrived at a hospital.
But the Real Heroes Were Never on the Script Pages
Mantooth understood that the fictional story depended upon real professionals.
He often redirected praise toward the people actually working in the field.
EMS1 reported his comments about owing a lasting debt to firefighters, EMTs and paramedics.
That attitude became part of his legacy.
He could have used the fame of Emergency! simply to preserve his celebrity status.
Instead, he repeatedly used his platform to acknowledge the people who inspired the show.
