There was also an interesting connection between Mantooth’s fictional character and the real history of emergency medicine.

The character’s name, Johnny Gage, was connected to James O. “Jim” Page, a Los Angeles County Fire Department battalion chief who became one of the important pioneers of modern EMS.

According to EMS1’s retrospective, Mantooth explained that Page had been instrumental in developing the Los Angeles paramedic program and was sometimes referred to as a father of the system.

Page was initially reportedly alarmed that the character would be named after him, fearing it could create professional problems.

The name eventually became Johnny Gage.

Mantooth later spoke at Page’s funeral in 2004.

It was an appropriate connection.

The fictional character became famous.

The real pioneer helped build the system that made the character believable.

Mantooth Never Pretended to Be a Paramedic

One reason the EMS community respected him was that he understood the distinction between portraying a professional and actually being one.
