With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to a true television legend… See more

The idea that specially trained personnel could provide advanced medical care outside a hospital was not yet as familiar to the general public as it is today.

Then television introduced millions of Americans to the concept.

Mantooth played firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage, while Kevin Tighe played his partner, Roy DeSoto.

Together, they worked from the fictional Los Angeles County Fire Department Station 51, responding to fires, collisions, injuries and medical emergencies.

The series ran through the 1970s and became enormously influential.

The Television Academy identifies Mantooth as best known for his starring role on Emergency!, while NBC’s reporting on his death noted that the program helped introduce viewers to paramedics and emergency medicine.
